E Portfolios can be an ongoing medium for students to use and carry with them through their school years. I would like to use them in my classroom because I think they are a great way to set educational goals, develop a plan of action, collaborate with classmates and organize their work and accomplishments.
Here is a video of a teacher discussing how she uses e portfolios with her students.
Using e portfolios to record the learning process.
As you can see, students use this medium everyday in class and use feedback from the teacher and other students to make changes and improve their work. They also are able to self assess and evaluate their own work. All this in an organized manner and kept in one, easy to find spot- how many times have I had to help a student clean out his or her desk to search for work that was eaten by the Messy Desk Pest?! E portfolios can incorporate many other forms of media such as blogs, links to websites, and audio and video files. Effectively using e portfolios help develop skills and approaches to learning that students can use throughout their life. What students learn by using their e portfolios in their school years can be carried over to their time in college or university and then their work years. They provide an area that allows for growth and development and as their lives advance, so can their portfolio. That is part of my goal when incorporating anything into my teaching, how can I provide my students with the means to be self sufficient? By using this tool with my students, I can help them long after they have left my classroom!
